For example, a batch of bottled whisky is made up by barrels of whisky from distillation on 10/2/00, 1/5/00 & 5/8/01.

Why blend from various barrels? The quality and taste will be differed from distillations. The blender will examine all available barrels and blend them to make sure the consistancy of specific bottling/product line.

Additional info.:
Single Vintage – may blend from different barrels at different distillations but all being made in the same year. Most single vintage whisky is also a single barrel/batch whisky.
Single Barrel/Cask – bottled whisky from a single barrel/cask. Quality and taste may be differed from barrels even in a single distillation process.
